I’ll tell you how you can do it but first I’ll tell you how the solution to this “tiny unreadable text” problem struck me:

The text size on all the regular e-books that are not made for the PRS-505 looks so tiny it’s crazy to even try and read it

The font is supposed to be large enough so you can read effortlessly. Books on your PRS-505 should be read with the same ease as regular books on paper, so…

I surfed the internet for hours looking for a solution: either some software that could format my e-books to fit the PRS-505 screen or a manual that would show me how to do it. Only found the latter. It was a manual by Sony® which would show you how to configure Microsoft® Office Word to make .docs or .pdf’s that would fit the PRS-505 screen, nice!

So then I followed the instructions and copied the text from the .pdf file to word but… uh oh…

a thousand crazy line breaks appeared out of the blue!!!

Those crazy line breaks are a serious inconvenience, not only they are annoying, they make reading the book a tiresome task and not a pleasure, those breaks interrupt the natural flow of the reading.

The author used punctuation for where breaks or pauses are intended, these line breaks totally destroy the author’s work.

Also those line breaks extend the length of the document up to a 65%!!! And because the battery on your PRS-505 is based not on time used but on page turns, your battery life per charging cycle is reduced in a massive 65%!!!!!

A document or e-book on .pdf in order to be read on your PRS-505 needs to be configured in a special way, that’s why if they are in A4 or letter size, they are unreadable.

Accoding to the manual by Sony® You not only need to resize the paper size on Microsoft® Office Word but also set the margins to a specific distance.

Doing this resize paper and set margins thing every time and then having to spend 146 minutes removing line breaks (204 page e-book) for every document you want to read on your PRS-505 makes it a real PAIN.

 My guess is Sony® made it hard for us so we would rather buy the PRS-505 ready e-books (if available, their catalog is currently really small) from their Connect Store (even though we’d already bought the same e-books but letter-sized from amazon.com® or eBay®.)

If we do some math, spending 146 minutes manually removing the line breaks at minimum wage per hour $5.85 we’ve just wasted $14.23, it was cheaper to buy the book again on its paperback version!!! If you bought this nice PRS-505 at $279.99 I seriously doubt you are on minimum wage, I’m sure that your time is WAY more valuable.

Just to avoid the time consuming task of removing the line breaks, the waste of money involved in buying again the book but now on its paperback version and the eye strain from reading from the computer screen  (that’s one of the reasons why you and I bought the PRS-505 in the first place, right?)

I’d just print the e-book, waste 200+ paper sheets and contribute to the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil...

NOW the point of having the PRS-505 was completely lost, the PRS-505 was ready to be stored along with the old walkmans.

I was extremely disappointed; nobody told me it would be that hard just to read the e-books that have been sitting in my computer for a couple of years now, and really, they’ve been sitting there because…

That’s why the PRS-505 looked like the best thing ever!  And it surely is, it’s a natural step in the evolution of technology, its portability and features are amazing!
